The Mysterious Happenings of Walter S. Turncoat
-----------------------

The British Ladies Book Club
Darjeeling, India

Dear Mother,
Darjeeling is actually a rather fine place to be. Why, its even better than our own street back in England. I’ve met your cousin Beatrice, and she is delightful (even though she is rather chatty) and charming. She took me to the the British Ladies Book Club, which I am sure you would have enjoyed, but I myself did not, for obvious reasons. Anyway mother, it didn’t take me long to realize something was not right there. You know me, mother. Once I get near an adventure, I cannot rest until I’ve solved it. The following manuscript is Madeline’s interpretation of my adventures in Darjeeling. She calls it ‘The Mysterious Happenings of Walter S. Turncoat’. Magnificent, don’t you agree?
Your loving son,
Walter S. Turncoat
Postscript: Madeline is a young girl in

the apartment across from me. She is a writer.

Most people suppose that all adventures start on dark, gloomy days. But that was not the case for Walter S. Turncoat: amature detective.

It was yet another bright day in Darjeeling, with the magnificent snow - capped mountains overlooking the town. But Walter, someone not yet used to the climate, was perspiring in the heat.Yet he still refused to part with his dark brown trenchcoat and fedora, no matter how his Aunt Beatrice chided.

“Walter, stop this childish nonsense. Take that atrocity off your head and shoulders and wear these.”

These, referred to the ugliest pair of trousers and vest Walter had ever seen.

“Aunt Beatrice, I can’t wear those! I’ll be laughed at!”

“Stuff and nonsense,” Aunt Beatrice said. “Put them on”

And so Walter had no choice but to button the trousers and vest. Feeling as ridiculous as a clown, he made his way into the parlor with his face burning.Even Aunt Beatrice smothered a giggle.
